What this part does on the machine

The fuel filter keeps water and dirt out of the injection system. On a common rail engine it protects the most expensive part of the engine, so it is not the place to save money.

There are usually two in series: a pre-filter with a water separator and a final filter behind it. Watch out for variants of the same machine. The same type shipped with and without fuel preheating, and each version takes a different pre-filter; the only way to tell is on the machine, by whether the filter head has an electrical connector. A photo of the data plate answers it fastest.
