What this part does on the machine

Breathers equalise pressure in tanks and in the crankcase. They are small, cheap items that get forgotten, but a blocked tank breather can draw oil past the seals and a blocked crankcase breather can push oil into the intake.

This covers tank breather plugs, vented filler caps and crankcase breather filters. They look nearly identical and differ only in thread and flow, so the same rule applies as with filters: the number decides, not the appearance.
